Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition of decreased bone strength, resulting in an increased risk of broken bones. Osteoporosis does not cause symptoms but can be detected with a bone density (DXA) scan. Bone strength often decreases as we get older, but an evaluation is important to make sure there aren’t other reasons for a concerning DXA. There are medications that can reduce the risk of fractures for patients at high risk. The National Osteoporosis Foundation provides helpful information on osteoporosis.
